The Fat Boy Invitational, first known as "Bob & Eric's 1st Annual Fall Golf Invitational", was started in 1996, by Eric Accola and Bob "Bopper" Young. Initially, the event was started to give a group of Sentry Insurance employees, and their guests, an opportunity to get together and play the SentryWorld Golf Course. More four-somes were added in the event's second year, and in 1998, Eric changed the name of the event to the "Fat Boy Invitational". In 1999, one of the teams in the tournament donated their skins' game winnnings to Brian Dumler's junior golf program at SentryWorld, and from that point on, it became the mission of the Fat Boy Invitational to raise money and support local junior golf programs.
In 2006, the Fat Boy started the "Fat Boy Golf Scholarship", as part of the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin. Since 2006, the Fat Boy has awarded over $17,000 in scholarships to area high school students to assist with the ever-increasing expense of pursuing a higher education.
In 2012, The Portage County Junior Golf Tournament, or “The PoCo Junior”, was started by members of the Fat Boy Invitational committee. The PoCo Junior was designed to be a low cost golf event for kids residing in Portage County or who particpate in a junior golf program located in Portage County.
Since 1999, The Fat Boy has donated over $45,000 to support local junior golf programs. Donations have been used for instruction, green fees, teaching aids, equipment, youth days, golf team uniforms, trophies, bus trips to PGA events, supplementing the PoCo Junior and high school scholarships.
The motto of the Fat Boy, as said best by Mike Fisher, is “Making a Difference in Today’s Youth and Tomorrow’s Game." The goal of the Fat Boy is to give kids an opportunity to explore the game of golf in an organized and structured environment. The game of golf teaches today’s youth honesty, loyalty, respect, dedication, passion, and simply, how to have fun.
